Modifying file structure
To optimize the use of RDE files, you will need to fine-tune the file structure. You may want to delete unwanted fields, change the order of fields in the file and/or add non-standard fields.
- To add new fields, open the relevant RDE file and select File > Modify file structure…. This opens the file structure editor as shown below.

- To insert a field, click on the Insert button. A new field (NewFld) will be inserted in the list and can be renamed and assigned a new field type and size. To save these changes, click on the OK button.
- Fields can be moved up and down the file structure using the drag buttons provided to the left of the field names.
- Field names can be freely edited although you should not edit the names of standard names. Field names will be auto-translated to a different language if you are running a foreign language menu system.
- To delete a field, click on the field name and press the Delete button. In some cases, BRAHMS will not permit you delete a field. When you delete a field, the data stored in that field (column) are lost.
Restoring previous file structure
If you accidentally delete a field or otherwise make a mistake when editing RDE file structure, you can restore the original file using the BAK/ TBK files created when you edited the file. BAK files are backups of DBF files. TBK files are backups of FPT (memo) files. The TBK file only exists if the RDE file has one or more memo fields. To do this, select File > Restore last auto-BAK file when viewing the damaged file. Alternatively, to do this manually for a file named MYFILE which has one or more memo fields:
- Backup the ‘damaged’ files MYFILE.DBF and MYFILE.FPT
- Use your file manager to rename MYFILE.BAK to MYFILE.DBF
- Use your file manager to rename MYFILE.TBK to MYFILE.FPT
