Lookup functions copy data from your main database dictionaries into the current file. Lookups are especially import in RDE, critical for fast, efficient and reduced-error data entry.
Lookups are activated by a right-click in the active field or by pressing F9. Clearly, this function is only of value if the database you are currently using already has some data. The more data stored in the database, the more useful the lookup functions become. An example using a standard lookup function:
Note that with taxon names, it is better, where possible, to use lookups in the SP fields rather than the FAMILY or GENUS fields since the family and genus are automatically copied in when a species is selected. The same principle applies to using the GAZETTEER field instead of COUNTRY, MAJOR or MINOR.
Shift+F9 activates a lookup in an external file - if one is available - for example an external gazetteer file.
