Introduction to text reports

Text/HTML reports can be used to format a wide range of outputs including those that you intend to continue editing in your word processor. Examples are different styles of checklists and monograph related outputs.

The best way to learn how to create text reporting templates is to refer to the various Text report exercises.

Text Report templates are probably easier to design than Visual Reports. Nevertheless, there are a few features you need to understand, notably field names and file aliases all explained in the help text.

You can use Text Reports to combine and format data from any fields in the currently open file(s) into a TXT text or HTML file. Such files are normally transferred into a word processor. They can be created, edited and 'generated' using the main reports form opened using the standard button and selecting the Text/HTML reports option.

Text/HTML reports can be created almost anywhere in BRAHMS for example from the main collector name file, diary, an RDE file, extract files and so on although as with most reporting functions, extract files are the most common source of data for reporting.

The most fertile area to produce text reports is the taxon output file. Here, you can bring together and integrate species and collection derived data using the numerous Tools options provided.

The above report was produced using Text reporting. The report template used to produce this complex report includes only 3 command lines to print the fields FAMILY, TAXTREAT and SPECLIST. The TAXTREAT and SPECLIST fields were pre-formatted using a taxon extract Tools option. The text created by the report can easily be transferred to your word processor.
