Research Area

Retrograde signalling from mitochondrion to nucleus

Research Description

The energy-demand and metabolic requirements of the plant cells differ under changing environmental conditions and therefore, a well-regulated interaction and reciprocal communication between different cellular compartments is necessary for an optimal development and growth. Signals that sense changes in the organelles and transduce them to the nucleus are referred to as retrograde and are critical to allow adaptation of the bioenergetic state of the organelles. The mitochondrial retrograde signalling pathway in plants is not well understood and the molecules that act as retrograde signals have not been identified. The aim of my research is to investigate retrograde signalling from mitochondrion to nucleus in Arabidopsis thaliana. My work so far was focussed on redox regulation processes in plant cells, oxidative stress and the characterization of antioxidant defense systems, like peroxiredoxins.
